NEW YORK -- "Super Bowl 50" just looks better than "Super Bowl L." They found its hard to build an attractive image around what league vice-president Jaime Weston calls "the lonely L." Using the big 5-0 instead had the added benefit of emphasizing the significance of the Super Bowls 50th iteration. That allows the NFL to celebrate the milestone all season long. "Its a much bolder statement," said Weston, the NFLs VP for brand and creative. In 2017 in Houston, though, the game will revert to "Super Bowl LI." Adding that I to the end squares off the L and makes it more adaptable graphically, Weston said. And the league has no desire to ditch the Roman numerals for good. The NFL first started using them for the fifth Super Bowl in 1971. They have a practical value for a league whose regular season and championship game take place in different calendar years. Then there are the more intangible benefits. "It really does differentiate us," Weston said. The NFL held focus groups before the 40th Super Bowl and found that fans could associate logos from years past with their memories of watching that particular game. "Weve got a lot of room for flexibility," Riley said as the off-season was starting. "There is a tremendous amount of flexibility depending on what happens. Were ready. Now, do I feel any pressure? No, I dont. I dont feel any pressure at all. Im going to do the best job that I can do and we will all do the best job we can do. I dont think we have to recruit Chris and LeBron and Dwyane again. "Im not dropping championship rings on the table for those guys," Riley added, referring to his famous recruiting trick from 2010. "They can drop their own." Wade took a considerable amount of criticism this past season, first for missing 28 regular-season games -- largely because of what the Heat called a maintenance program for his long-problematic knees -- and then for struggling in the NBA Finals. Wade averaged 24.3 points in his first 11 seasons and is unquestionably the most accomplished player in Heat history, leading the franchises all-time lists in several categories. Riley calls Wade "an icon" and remains sold on his value to a championship team, though acknowledges that at 32 and with plenty of injuries in his past, some continued evolution to his game -- and perhaps his role -- could be needed.
